## What humidity level should a reptile habitat be?

Targets vary by species. Crested geckos sit at 60–80% during the day, ball pythons at 60–80% during the day and 80–100% at night, and leopard geckos at 20–40% with a humid hide for shedding. Measure ambient humidity with a digital hygrometer, then compare your reading to your species’ range.

## How the check works

Each species has a published target band, taken from the ReptiFiles species care guides and the RSPCA crested gecko care sheet. Only ball pythons have a separate night range: 80–100%, which is the current ReptiFiles guidance.

The check compares your measured humidity against the band for the context you select. A daytime reading uses the day band. Ticking "Night reading" moves ball pythons to their night band; crested and leopard geckos stay on their day range because they have no separate night target.

Worked example: a crested gecko at 70% comes back OK against the 60–80% day range, and a ball python at 90% at night sits inside the 80–100% night band.

## Humidity questions, answered

**Q: What humidity should a crested gecko enclosure be?**

60–80% during the day. The RSPCA advises misting to a peak and letting the enclosure dry back to 40–50% before spraying again, which for most setups means once or twice a day.

**Q: What humidity does a ball python need at night?**

ReptiFiles sets the night range at 80–100%, with 60–80% during the day. A moisture-retaining substrate helps hold the night band, and night humidity naturally rises as temperatures drop.

**Q: What humidity is too low for a leopard gecko?**

Below 20% ambient humidity is outside the range ReptiFiles gives for leopard geckos. Keep the enclosure mostly dry and provide a humid hide filled with damp moss during shedding.

**Q: How do I measure reptile enclosure humidity?**

Use a digital hygrometer placed at mid-enclosure height, away from the water bowl and the misting path. Readings near the substrate or directly under a spray run higher than the ambient level the target range refers to.

**Q: Why does a ball python need higher humidity at night?**

Night humidity rises naturally as the enclosure cools, and ball pythons shed best inside the 80–100% night band, per ReptiFiles. If your night reading sits below it, mist in the evening or switch to a moisture-retaining substrate.
