# Snake enclosure size calculator

> Pick your snake and expected adult length to get both a minimum floor footprint (Swiss Mindestanforderungen 0.7L × 0.5L) and the ReptiFiles recommended outline (L × 0.5L) with inches, floor area, and cm equivalents. The two values come from the same snake but differ in size — minimum is the welfare floor, recommended is the outline that lets the snake fully stretch.

Use the interactive calculator on the page: https://petguidecalc.com/reptile/enclosure-size-calculator/. Pick a snake and enter its expected adult length; the calculator returns minimum and recommended footprints in inches, cm, and ft².

## How big should a snake enclosure be?

A snake’s minimum floor footprint is 0.7 × expected adult length by 0.5 × expected adult length, per the Swiss Mindestanforderungen. The recommended outline is full length by half length, per ReptiFiles. Height should be at least half the snake’s length and never less than 24 in (60 cm).

## Footprint rules at a glance

| Species | Adult length | Minimum (0.7L × 0.5L) | Recommended (L × 0.5L) | Min height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ball python | 39 in (100 cm) | 28 × 20 in (70 × 50 cm) (3.77 ft²) | 39 × 20 in (100 × 50 cm) (5.38 ft²) | 24 in (60 cm) |
| Corn snake | 47 in (120 cm) | 33 × 24 in (84 × 60 cm) (5.43 ft²) | 47 × 24 in (120 × 60 cm) (7.75 ft²) | 24 in (60 cm) |

Both formulas scale with the snake’s expected adult length, not current length. See the [pet snake care guide](/reptile/snake-care/) for the full setup.

## How the footprints are calculated

Minimum floor = 0.7L × 0.5L (Swiss Mindestanforderungen). For a 39 in (100 cm) ball python that works out to 28 in (70 cm) × 20 in — about 3.77 ft² (3,500 cm²).

Recommended outline = L × 0.5L (ReptiFiles). For the same ball python that is 39 in (100 cm) × 20 in — about 5.38 ft² (5,000 cm²).

Height should be at least L/2 and never less than 24 in (60 cm). For a 47 in (120 cm) corn snake that is 24 in of headroom; for shorter snakes the 24 in (60 cm) floor wins.

## Snake enclosure FAQ

**Q: What is the minimum enclosure size for a ball python?**

Per the Swiss Mindestanforderungen, the minimum floor footprint is 0.7 × expected adult length by 0.5 × expected adult length. For a 39 in (100 cm) ball python that is 28 in (70 cm) × 20 in. ReptiFiles recommends the full-length outline (39 in (100 cm) × 20 in).

**Q: How big should a corn snake enclosure be?**

For a 47 in (120 cm) corn snake, the minimum floor is 33 in (84 cm) × 24 in (about 5.43 ft²) and the recommended outline is 47 in (120 cm) × 24 in (about 7.75 ft²). Corn snakes are active and benefit from the larger size.

**Q: How tall should a snake enclosure be?**

At least half the snake’s expected adult length and never less than 24 in (60 cm). For a 47 in (120 cm) corn snake that means 24 in of headroom. Ball pythons are heavy-bodied and rarely climb, so the floor footprint matters more than extra height.

**Q: Do I measure by expected or current length?**

Use the expected adult length — minimum size scales with the snake’s full-grown body, not its current hatchling or juvenile length. ReptiFiles gives typical adult ranges; use the midpoint of that range as your target.

**Q: Is minimum the same as recommended?**

No. Minimum (Swiss Mindestanforderungen 0.7L × 0.5L) is the welfare floor — 3.77 ft² for a 39 in (100 cm) ball python. Recommended (ReptiFiles L × 0.5L) gives the snake room to fully stretch — 5.38 ft². Both scale linearly with the snake’s length.
