## BCS 1–9 reference

| 1 | Severely underweight | Ribs, spine, and pelvic bones are visible from a distance; severe muscle wasting over the back and hips. This is a medical emergency. |
| 2 | Very underweight | Bones prominent with little soft-tissue cover; obvious concave flank; no fat pad over the ribs or hips. |
| 3 | Underweight | Ribs, spine, and pelvic bones easily felt with minimal pressure; very thin fat cover; abdominal tuck pronounced. |
| 4 | Slightly underweight | Ribs and spine easily palpated with light pressure; pelvic bones visible but covered; minimal flank tuck. |
| 5 | Ideal | Ribs feel like fingertips passing over the back of your hand — felt with light pressure but not seen. Spine and pelvic bones well covered. Waist visible behind the ribs when viewed from above. |
| 6 | Slightly overweight | Ribs palpable with slightly firmer pressure; spine covered by a thicker soft-tissue layer; waist less obvious from above. |
| 7 | Overweight | Ribs hard to feel under a thick fat cover; spine barely palpable; waist absent; flank rounded when viewed from above. |
| 8 | Very overweight | Ribs very difficult to feel; heavy fat deposits over shoulders, spine, and rump; obvious dewlap (in does); slow gait. |

## How the score is calculated

The scale uses two inputs on a 1–9 range: how the bones feel under the skin (palpation) and how the rabbit looks from above and the side (visual). Each input maps the same 1–9 ladder, with 1 marking severe emaciation and 9 marking obesity.

Final BCS = round(average of palpation and visual). 5/9 — ideal range — is the target. Anything below 4 suggests weight loss is too aggressive, illness, or dental disease; anything above 6 signals the need to reduce pellets and expand exercise space.

If palpation and visual scores differ by more than 1.5 (example: 4 vs 7), the page flags a discrepancy of about 3.0 and asks for a re-check — the two views should agree within a point or so.

Worked example: a chunky rabbit scoring 7 on palpation and 8 on visual lands at BCS 8/9 (overweight) — cut pellets by about 25%, keep hay unlimited, and expand free-roam time.

## Body condition questions

**Q: What is the ideal BCS for a rabbit?**

A score of 5/9 is the target. At BCS 5 you can feel the ribs with light pressure (like fingertips passing over the back of your hand), the spine and hips are well covered, and a waist is visible behind the ribs when viewed from above.

**Q: How do I tell if my rabbit is too thin?**

If the ribs, spine, and hip bones are easy to see or feel without any soft-tissue cover, the rabbit scores 1–3/9 (underweight). Pair a low BCS with a vet visit: dental disease, gut stasis, or chronic pain are common underlying causes.

**Q: How do I tell if my rabbit is overweight?**

A rabbit that is hard to feel the ribs on, has no visible waist, and a broad flat back scores 7–9/9 (overweight). Does may also develop a large dewlap. Cut pellets by 25%, keep hay unlimited, and weigh weekly.

**Q: Why do palpation and visual scores sometimes disagree?**

Long-haired breeds (Angora, Lionhead) hide ribs visually even when BCS is good; dewlap-heavy does can look overweight when the underlying BCS is 5. Re-score with a fresh palpation — if the two views still differ by more than 1.5, ask a rabbit-savvy vet to confirm.
