# Hamster bedding depth calculator

> Enter your cage floor length and width, pick a target depth (10/15/20/25 cm), and get the bedding volume plus the RSPCA verdict. The minimum is 15 cm; 25 cm or more suits burrowing breeds. Default floor dimensions come from the species’ minimum cage size — no need to look up a separate table.

The calculator converts your target depth into a bedding volume and checks it against the published minimum for the selected species. It does not evaluate a specific bedding product — dust, absorbency, and safety of the substrate itself follow the species’ husbandry guidance and the product label.

Use the interactive calculator on the page: https://petguidecalc.com/hamster/bedding-depth-calculator/. Pick a hamster species, enter floor L×W, and choose a depth band (10/15/20/25 cm) to get the bedding volume and the RSPCA verdict.

## How deep should hamster bedding be?

The RSPCA hamster care sheet sets 15 cm as the minimum, with 25 cm better for burrowing. A 100×50 cm cage at 15 cm holds about 75 L of bedding — a Syrian benefits from 120×60 cm at 25 cm (180 L) for proper burrow depth.

## Depth bands at a glance

| Species | Min floor | Recommended floor | Wheel | Depth bands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Syrian hamster | 100×50 cm | 120×60 cm | 28 cm | Shallow (10 cm) · Minimum (15 cm) · Comfortable (20 cm) · Ideal for burrowing (25 cm) |
| Roborovski hamster | 100×50 cm | 120×60 cm | 20 cm | Shallow (10 cm) · Minimum (15 cm) · Comfortable (20 cm) · Ideal for burrowing (25 cm) |
| Chinese hamster | 100×50 cm | 120×60 cm | 20 cm | Shallow (10 cm) · Minimum (15 cm) · Comfortable (20 cm) · Ideal for burrowing (25 cm) |
| Winter white (Djungarian) hamster | 100×50 cm | 120×60 cm | 20 cm | Shallow (10 cm) · Minimum (15 cm) · Comfortable (20 cm) · Ideal for burrowing (25 cm) |
| Campbell's dwarf hamster | 100×50 cm | 120×60 cm | 20 cm | Shallow (10 cm) · Minimum (15 cm) · Comfortable (20 cm) · Ideal for burrowing (25 cm) |

Burrowing breeds (Syrians and most dwarfs) push past the minimum as soon as the cage allows.

## How the volume and verdict are set

Volume = floor length × floor width × depth ÷ 1000 (cm³ to liters). For a 120×60 cm cage at 25 cm the result is 180.0 L (47.55 US gal).

Verdict bands per the RSPCA: depth < 15 cm = below-minimum; 15–19 cm = meets-minimum; ≥ 20 cm = exceeds-recommended. A 100×50 cm cage at 15 cm reads meets-minimum (75.0 L); at 25 cm it reads exceeds-recommended (180.0 L).

Below-minimum cages also report a shortfall to the 15 cm floor: a 100×50 cm cage at 10 cm is short by 25.0 L relative to the 15 cm target.

## Bedding depth questions

**Q: How deep should hamster bedding be?**

At least 15 cm (the RSPCA minimum). For a 120×60 cm cage at 25 cm you get 180.0 L of bedding, which exceeds the recommended band and supports burrows.

**Q: Is 10 cm of bedding enough for a hamster?**

No. 10 cm sits below the RSPCA minimum of 15 cm. A 100×50 cm cage at 10 cm holds only 50.0 L and is short by 25.0 L versus the 15 cm standard.

**Q: Do dwarf hamsters need less bedding?**

No — all hamster species benefit from the same minimum 15 cm of bedding, per RSPCA. Roborovskis and other dwarfs burrow actively; a 25 cm depth is ideal when the cage allows it.

**Q: How much bedding does a Syrian hamster need?**

For a 120×60 cm cage at 25 cm depth (the RSPCA recommended band) you need 180.0 L of bedding — about a full large bag of paper-based substrate.

**Q: Can I mix bedding types to add depth cheaply?**

Yes — many keepers layer paper-based substrate for burrow stability and add hay on top for enrichment, then spot-clean the soiled layer. Keep total depth inside the RSPCA 15 cm minimum and 20 cm+ recommended band.
