## Quick answer

Yes. Strawberries sit in the treat band of the veterinary sources we follow: RVC lists "Strawberry (and plant)" in its fruits to feed "once or twice a week", and SPCA New Zealand, PDSA and RSPCA Australia all include strawberries in their fruit lists.

One voice disagrees. Merck Veterinary Manual's professional edition groups berries with sugary treats that "should not be fed" in its diet-composition guidance. As with blueberries, we keep the treat band the four other sources describe — a small berry, once or twice a week — and quote the Merck position in full on this page.

## Are strawberries good for guinea pigs?

Strawberries are sweet, and sugar is why the portion is tiny. SPCA New Zealand's fruit rule — 1–2 teaspoons, one to three times a week — fits a small berry; the rest of the diet stays hay first, then pellets and fresh vegetables.

We have no registered vitamin C figure for strawberries from our sources, so don't count them toward the 10–30 mg of vitamin C guinea pigs need daily. The leafy greens those sources single out (kale, parsley, bell peppers) do that job; a strawberry is the treat, not the supplement.

## How to feed strawberries

Serve one small berry, fresh and raw: rinsed, hulled if you like, and sliced so nothing gets bolted down. Never sweetened, sugared, or from jam or yoghurt-covered snacks.

The first time, offer a slice and watch the droppings for a day. The leaves are listed as safe by RVC and sit in SPCA New Zealand's weekly tier — wash them well and treat them as an occasional extra, not a daily green.

Introduce any new food gradually: a small taste at first, building up over a week or so, and keep every serving fresh and raw. Hay stays the main event at around 80% of the day's eating, with fresh vegetables as the supplement.

**When to contact your vet**: Guinea pigs hide illness well. Contact your vet promptly if your guinea pig stops eating or passes fewer droppings, seems lethargic or in pain, has diarrhea, or shows any sudden change in behavior — small pets go downhill fast, and same-day advice is always the safe call.

How we resolved it: Frequency follows RVC (A), whose fruit list is headed "fed as treats once or twice a week", with SPCA-NZ (B) in the same treat band ("1-2 tsp of fruit 1-3 times per week"). Merck Professional (S) opposes berries in its diet-composition guidance; as with blueberries, the two statements address different feeding contexts, so the treat-frequency guidance carries the verdict and the Merck position is preserved verbatim as the minority view. A PubMed re-review found no guinea-pig feeding-harm studies (search recorded 2026-09-12).
