# Can guinea pigs eat plantain?

## Quick answer

Yes — and the first job of this page is the name. RVC's safe list says "Plantain", and it means the weed: the rosette of ribwort or broadleaf plantain (Plantago species) that grows in lawns and along path edges. It does not mean the starchy banana-relative sold in fruit shops under the same name.

The register is single-source on this plant, like the rest of the wild herbs: RVC lists it, the wild-plant sweep found nothing against it, and no feeding study of plantain weed in guinea pigs exists. Our recommendation: the weed is a fine rotation green — the tropical fruit is a different plant entirely and not what any source on this page describes.

## Is plantain good for guinea pigs?

Herb plantain is one of the most common lawn weeds in the temperate world, and its tough, ribbed leaves are exactly the kind of coarse green a grazing animal handles well. On the RVC factsheet it sits in the fresh 10–15% band with the other weeds and herbs.

Our sources register no vitamin C or mineral figures for Plantago, so it does not count toward the 10–30 mg of vitamin C guinea pigs need daily. The leaf's job in the cage is variety and chewing — the nutrient carriers stay bell peppers, kale and parsley.

## How to feed plantain

Pick the younger leaves from unsprayed ground — path edges and lawns that skip the weed-killer — rinse them, and serve fresh and raw. Old leaves get stringy; the younger rosette leaves are the ones guinea pigs actually finish.

First servings stay small and watched, droppings checked the next day, as with every new green. Rotate with the other wild herbs so no single weed becomes the standing staple.
