# Can guinea pigs eat lettuce?

> Yes — no concerns. Verdict: safe. Daily · Part of the daily vegetable rotation · fresh and raw only.

## Quick answer

Yes. Romaine and gem lettuce are on the RVC safe vegetable list, and the RSPCA puts them in the "eat often" group: the vegetables to rotate through your guinea pig's daily fresh-food portion.

There is one named exception: iceberg lettuce. RVC excludes it ("other varieties but not Iceberg") and the RSPCA lists it under can't-eat, so we leave iceberg out entirely and stick to the leafy types both sources name.

## Is lettuce good for guinea pigs?

Lettuce is a watery, low-calorie vegetable, and that is exactly its job in the cage. The RSPCA's guidance is to rotate romaine and gem with other vegetables daily, so the fresh portion brings different nutrients across the week instead of the same one every day.

Lettuce is not a meaningful vitamin C source in our sources' lists. Cover the daily 10–30 mg guinea pigs need with the leafy greens those sources name for vitamin C, such as kale and parsley.

## How to feed lettuce

Wash the leaves, discard anything wilted or slimy, and serve raw at room temperature as part of the daily vegetable rotation.

Introduce any new vegetable gradually: a small amount at first, building up over a week or so. Remove uneaten leaves before they dry out in the cage.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Can guinea pigs have lettuce every day?**

Yes, for the safe types. RSPCA places gem and romaine lettuce in the eat-often vegetables to rotate daily; just vary the rotation through the week rather than serving only lettuce.

**Q: Can guinea pigs eat iceberg lettuce?**

We don't recommend it. RVC excludes Iceberg from its safe list and the RSPCA lists it under can't-eat. It is mostly water with little of what guinea pigs get from leafy vegetables, so choose romaine or gem instead.

**Q: How much lettuce can a guinea pig eat?**

A portion of leaf as part of the daily vegetable rotation, alongside at least one other vegetable. The hay rack stays the main event; fresh vegetables are the supplement to it.

**Q: Do guinea pigs eat lettuce in the wild?**

Wild cavies forage grasses rather than garden lettuce. The guidance on this page comes from veterinary care sheets for pet guinea pigs, which list romaine and gem lettuce among their safe daily vegetables.

## Safety notes

Introduce any new food gradually: a small taste at first, building up over a week or so, and keep every serving fresh and raw. Hay stays the main event at around 80% of the day's eating, with fresh vegetables as the supplement.

**When to contact your vet**: Guinea pigs hide illness well. Contact your vet promptly if your guinea pig stops eating or passes fewer droppings, seems lethargic or in pain, has diarrhea, or shows any sudden change in behavior — small pets go downhill fast, and same-day advice is always the safe call.
