## How the numbers work

The bird cage size tool checks your enclosure dimensions and bar spacing against published welfare minimums for the most common pet bird species. The minimum frame is per-bird, then scales for multi-bird setups. Sandpaper perches, a known bumblefoot risk, are flagged inline on the tool page.

## Bird care questions

### What is the minimum cage size for a budgie?

The published welfare minimum is 60 × 30 × 40 cm for a single budgie, with bar spacing ≤ 1.5 cm. For two budgies, scale to 80 × 40 × 50 cm. Cockatiels need more: 80 × 50 × 100 cm for a single bird, scaled up by ~30% per additional bird. The cage size calculator checks your measurements against these minimums and warns about sandpaper perches, which are known to cause bumblefoot.

### Can I use the cage size calculator for larger birds?

Yes — the calculator accepts custom dimensions, so you can check any species against the same bar-spacing and floor-area logic. Larger parrots have additional husbandry requirements (flight space, enrichment, social needs) that a single calculator can't cover, so treat the result as a starting point and verify against species-specific care sheets.
